Umami is one of the five basic tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami) which can be detected by the tastebuds on our tongue.

The taste of umami refers to the taste associated with MSG (monosodiumglutamate) which can be described as meaty, savory or brothy. You find umami in foods like meat, parmesan cheese, tomatoes, mushrooms or seaweed.

The term originates from Japan where it translates into something like “delicious taste”.
