Most wine industry people agree that the natural wine community is not the same as the traditional wine community. Then what is it?

In our article about the autocracy of law making we showed that classically we are used to thinking about wine as a realm sort of bridging science (oenology) and practice (winemaking).

Knowing this juxtaposition the natural wine-movement represents a punk moment or even a welcome resistance to this way of thinking.

Natural wine is a contradiction to ‘everything we thought we knew’. It is a way of living wine and everything natural by very different standards than your average winemaker.

Natural wine is punk

Natural wine is young people, not elderly with too much money.

Natural wine is women, not men.

Natural wine is artists, not farmers.

Natural wine is bees and insects, not pesticides.

Natural wine is diversity, not unification.

Natural wine is party and intoxication, not seriousness.

Natural wine is transparency, not hiding.

Natural wine is drinking, not collecting.

Natural wine is enjoying what you want, not fixed food and wine-pairings.

Natural wine is openness, not self containment.

Natural wine is old, not modern.

Natural wine is free fermentation, not controlled chemistry.

So it becomes clear that natural wine is sort of the opposite of what we are used to think about everything wine. And this is the beautiful thing about it.

Natural wine is punk.
